Drag Racing returned to Ballarat
on October 20th, the first of 5 meetings to be held
this season. 58 competitors rolled through the gates
to put on a show for the 1000 or so spectators in attendance.
It was agreed that this meeting was probably the best
so far and ran like clock work, with racers and fans
looking forward to the next meeting to be held on December
1st.
Time spent during the off-season on improving the facilities
was evident with improvements to the staging lanes and
the area directly behind the start line (these will
be sealed in the near future). It is hoped that for
the next meeting one of the two portable spectator stands
will be completed and ready for use.
Super
Gas - Stuart McBain
4 competitors fronted for the first round or racing
with Warren Smith in the Beretta defeating Lee Bektash's
Calibra, while the Gemini of Stuart McBain put Neil
Hendry's Subaru Vortex on the trailer. In the final,
McBain took the win with a better reaction over Smith.
Top 16 - Alister Paulin
Mr
Consistent, Alister Paulin, took his third final round
win in as many meetings by defeating Wayne Rowland in
his LJ Torana. The little orange HB Torana of Paulin
made its way to the final by defeating the red lighting
Paul Rodgers Jnr in the 1st round, the turbo charged
Centura of Andrew Sanders in the 2nd and Shane Harvey
in the semi final. On the other side of the ladder,
Wayne Rowland defeated Daryl Hepworth, Stephen Griffen
and Scott Waters to take his place in the final against
Paulin.
Quick 16 - Derek Wills
Derek
Wills, in his FC Holden, once again showed his class
by winning his third straight meeting in the Quick 16
bracket. The 1st semi saw Wills defeat the Commodore
of Mathew Cawthorn, while in the other semi final, Andrew
Francis driving his 350 Chev powered Celica defeated
the beautiful XP Falcon wagon of Phil Crosbie. The final
was a close affair with Wills taking the start line
advantage over Francis and holding that advantage to
the finish line.
Street - Adam Moody
18
competitors were on hand for the first round of Street
Eliminator. After 3 rounds of racing, Adam Moody, Steve
Corey and Lucinda Rowland remained. In the first semi,
the battle of the Commodores saw Adam Moody take the
win over Steve Corey while Lucinda Rowland took the
bye into the final. The final saw Rowland snooze on
the lights to allow Moody to stay in front for the win.
Bike - Andrew Yannaris
4 competitors fronted for the bike bracket. With 3 of
the 4 competitors suffering from mechanical problems,
Andrew Yannaris took home the winners trophy riding
his Suzuki.
Best
Presented
The best presented and burnout awards went to Phil Crosbie
with his immaculate chop top Ford XP wagon.
