Ray has been involved in Drag Racing since he was 21yrs old. He started out his racing in a HQ Statesman running a 350chev, and enjoyed the success he had with the old girl till the bug to go faster got a hold of him. As this is usually what happens to all of us, he upgraded the Statesman with a new combo. Ray found himself a strong 454BB chev to slot in between the front rails of the statesman. Ray raced this for a couple of seasons at the old Ballarat Track where he had great success and alot of ups & downs also. Unfortunately his family commitments forced Ray to give up his passion for some 15years and he became a spectator in that time, Ray still had his hands involved by helping out friends with there cars to keep his passion alive.
Still wishing to be part of Drag Racing, Ray went out to purchase a new car with the intentions of getting back into the sport his most desires. In 2003 he found what he was looking for and purchased himself his new weapon. This being a 1990 VN SS commodore, but not just a nice streeter this was a 355 stroker street beast, which was swung together by the boys at Hi - Energy Racing in Melbourne.
Ray has had excellent results with his car at the Ballarat Drag Racing Track, Ray has taken out numerous bracket meets and always puts on a show for the crowd, with huge long smokey burnouts. He has also had numerous burnout prizes from the meetings he has competed at and never seems to dissappoint the large crowds at hand.
When Ray first brought the commodore it was no slouch at the drags, the cars maiden outing was consistant 8.00's on the Ballarat 1/8th mile surface. Since then Ray has gotten ontop of the new Commodore and has slowerly but surely dropped his times down to running consistantly in the 7.70's @ 89.0mph, with his PB being 7.63@91.0mph.
Rays most successful win to date would have to be Winning the Ballarat Drag Racing Club.Inc Track Championship 2006/2007 season, after having to fight off a late challenge from another local racer Jeremy Gannon. Rays has always been just out of the points for this convertered title in the pass few years and is just a magnificent acheivment from him to finally cross the line ahead of all the others.
This years season is looking to be just as close, with a number of cars in the race to take this title away from Ray. Lets hope Ray can backup his success to date with another trophy in the lounge room bookcase to show all his hard work and determination for the passion of Drag Racing in Ballarat.
Ray would like to thank all those people who have helped him with information or services through the years to get his car to where it is today. Ray would especially like to thank hisfamily for the support to put up with his passion of Drag Racing. Ray also thanks the Ballarat Drag Racing Club.inc for a terrific venue and all the members that put in such a huge effort to have these meetings running as smoothly as possible.
